Find multiple faces with Canon's improved Face Detection technology
DIGIC III features Face Detection technologies, giving the you best possible results in any shooting situation. Face Detection AF/AE sets the focus point and exposure for the faces of your subjects. Face Detection FE adjusts the flash to correctly illuminate your subject to provide the best balance between your subject and the overall scene, eliminating the common problems of over- and underexposed faces.

With DIGIC III, your images boast superior quality, the camera operates at top efficiency and battery life is enhanced. What's more, DIGIC III enables Canon's Face Detection Technology and Red-eye Correction to give you better, more true-to-life people shots. Simply press the Shutter Button halfway down, and the camera automatically pinpoints the faces in the scene and chooses the ideal focus point. The camera controls exposure settings and flash to keep every face looking bright and natural. Red eyes can be corrected during playback.

iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC III Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

Red-eye correction detects and corrects red-eye during playback. In unusual cases where red-eye is not automatically detected, it can easily be corrected manually during playback mode.

The PowerShot SD870IS Digital ELPH features ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto settings that reduce the effects of camera shake and sharpen subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility.

17 Shooting Modes, Including 10 Special Scene Modes Advanced presets for the best possible photos under certain conditions.

5 out of 5 stars Better than I expected - A great point and shoot   September 8, 2008
Tamra (Seattle, WA USA)
I purchased this camera to replace a Panasonic Lumix DMC FX07A that was lost on a kayaking trip. I was pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the pictures turned out. The images are crisp and the camera is easy to use. Although slightly larger than my Panasonic, I find the large display and larger optical zoom more than make up for this difference. I am happy to be able to zoom while shooting video, a feature my Lumix did not offer. The lack of view finder, which I'm seeing in some reviews as a negative, is not an issue with me because the large display allows me to get a good visual on the subject, even in sunlight. I'm very pleased with the performance and feel of this camera.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the lot 2008   September 7, 2008
Wilbur D. Wong (Richmond, CA USA)
I purchased this for my wife, and it is excellent in nearly all ways. I bought the 800 predecessor for my daughter last year and she is very happy with it. The most important issue perhaps is the wide angle. You can not back away far enough from many subjects indoors with a 35 mm equivalent lens. Yes, you sacrifice the long telephoto end (without digital zoom) but unless you are photographing your daughters competitive event, you can walk closer to most subjects.

My serious camera is a professional 4 x 5 view camera, and my semi serious camera is a 5D with 3 lenses. However this is a great camera as a handy reach for on the spur of the moment.

I shouldn't even comment on image quality, it is good for nearly anything the above average shooter needs (or wants?). I have even included some shots from this camera on a wedding set.

The one complaint is that the on/off switch is too easily pressed accidentally, the predecessor 800's power button was flush with the body, this one protrudes and an accidental turn on when the lens isn't able to extend wouldn't be the best for it. I glued a small half inch foam rubber furniture protector around it after punching a small hole in the middle to solve the problem.

A side note of advice for a camera case is that the Tamrac T4 is a perfect fit for this camera. (I must have looked at least 20 cases, that one is simple without an overload of extra compartments and the camera fits smoothly in and out without any excess slop. Don't buy the Canon leather wallet for this camera, you will find it is like getting in and out of tights, and you will press the power button for sure, which will make the lens try to extend . . . .

5 out of 5 stars Best Point and Shoot Camera Out there.   September 7, 2008
Timothy D. Stevenson
I recently upgraded my 5 year old Sony Cybershot to this camera and I'm more than pleased. I really spent some time reading reviews (between dpreviews and dcresource) and my final two choices were down to the Powershot SD870IS and the Lumix DMC-TZ5K. The 10x zoom on the Lumix almost had me but by reading some reviews here I heard the Canon had better night and low light shots.

-It's compact and light yet feels solid in your hand and also quite easy to operate.

-The menu wasn't hard to figure out and the buttons are a decent size. There is a surprising amount of custom settings for a camera this size.

-Battery life goes a long way too. I bought an extra just for convenience but I can go 200-250 day shots easy before I get the low battery warning.

- Matched up with a cheap tripod you can take some great night shots with ISO 80 and a long (5 - 10 - 15 second) exposure.

- The color on this camera is amazing! And with the vivid color setting on it really makes for some deep and rich blues and greens. There are other cool color settings like color accent and color switch that are fun to play with.

- Video is great as well at 30fps. You can make videos as long as you want. It would have been nice to have a stereo mic but that's me just being super picky.

- The 3" LCD display is beautiful and puts other cameras to shame. It makes for some great previewing. There is a great preview feature that detects faces in a picture then shows you a closeup directly after taking a shot so you can easily see if anyone was blinking or smiling. Very cool.

- It has been mentioned here before but you need to be a little careful with the power button when the camera is in the case. It can be easy sometimes to turn it on inside the case and the lens will try to extend. Yikes. Just be careful when you put it away and you'll be fine.

You won't be disappointed by this camera! Feel free to browse my Picasa site to have a look at some of the photos I've taken so far.

This camera works great and is easy to use. The delay is very short (Much faster than my last Digital camera Nikon) and has tons of features. I love the super wide angle. Would highly recommend.
