Invaluable Guide for Photography August 6, 2006 Daniel S. Perrin (Conshohocken, PA United States) This is a large hardcover book printed on glossy paper that is about 10" wide and 12" long. At the listed price of $6.88 it is a true steal. It has a very thick and strong binder. There are very few pages that don't have photographs and many that have several, mostly color, which illustrate the text. There must be 500 photos in all. Though half the book is dedicated to film photography, don't let that bother you at all. The photography principals the authors explore are almost all applicable to digital photography. This is not a highly technical book like Ben Long's "Complete Book of Digital Photography" but rather it glances over the basic technical details of aperture shutter speed, depth of field etc. where Ben Long tackles them in great detail. Instead this masterpiece covers photographic techniques such as how to shoot portraits, landscapes, macro subjects, close-ups and the principles of composition etc. It explains how to take advantage of natural light and the ways to improve your flash pictures, and all with photos to back up the authors' explanations. I feel it is a great companion to Ben Long's book. They are perfect compliments to one another. I have just moved from film to digital and feel myself very fortunate to have purchased these two fine books. I have not yet reached the part that emphasizes digital photography but even if all those pages were blank, the book would still be an incredible value.
Great Photography Book! January 29, 2005 Maribel Bojorge (Los Angeles, CA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is the perfect book for people who want to learn photography. The descriptions make sense and are illustraded with beautiful sample pictures. This book talks about film types, how aperture and shutter speed works, filters, camera accessories, etc. I've had my camera for years and I had never quite understood all its capabilities but this book has made it easy to finaly "get the picture" ;-) I know I still have a lot to learn but at least I have the basics now. This book is also good for those photographers that want to learn about digital photography and how it works. They money I paid for this book was well spent.
